Encourage your kids to do volunteer work
Saturday, 30 October 2010 22:14
There are so many reasons why encouraging your kids to do volunteer work is a good thing. It builds character, provides a different type of recreational outlet, teaches a good work ethic, removes them from the comforts of their video games and computer, exposes them to the needs of others, and shows them how rewarding it is to help others, etc.
I'm seeing that my kids love to do volunteer work so I'm going to make a committment to find something for them to do monthly. Even with my son who is autistic, volunteer work has given him something positive to focus on that also helps his social skills. As a result, I can tell he feels a sense of accomplishment which is important. My daughter has said that volunteer work inspires her to want to save the world. So in essence, volunteer work is a way to groom young leaders.
Volunteer work also strengthens family time. When you're working side by side with your children, you never have to wonder where they are and what they're doing. The more you get your children involved, they will take an interest beyond the things you expose them to and initiate doing community service on their own. When you start children volunteering at a young age, they'll grow to develop a passion for a particular cause they are interested in. That builds good, productive citizens and our world could always use more of them. Happy volunteering!!!
