Celebrating Our Fathers

The importance and appreciation of fatherhood often go unnoticed. The presence of active fathers in the lives of their children is so significant, that like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day cannot capture its worth. Unfortunately, the number of men who actively parent their children is decreasing and therefore the engaged black father is an elusive character in our culture. According to Newsweek, the percentage of black children living in fatherless homes– roughly fifty percent- has perpetuated orthodoxy that black men are irresponsible and indifferent to fatherhood. As Father’s Day approaches, so does the extinction of black fathers. A father figure is a very important aspect of a child’s growth and development and consequently the absence of a child’s father can leave lifelong effects.

While there are various reasons why the statistics paint a grim picture of fatherhood in our community, Father’s Day is a time to celebrate those who stepped up to the plate to meet the needs of their children. It is also a day to celebrate those who filled the gap for a child by being that much needed “father figure.” This unselfish dedication to being a strong male figure for a child deserves acknowledgement and appreciation. Both sons and daughters alike have essential needs that can only be met through a father. For a male child a father provides an example of manhood, discipline and drive. For the female child a father provides much needed unconditional love, which gives her a sense of self-worth and confidence.

As we reflect on the fathers in our lives, we should be appreciative of what they provide. They should be applauded for the activities attended, the pep talks given, the teams coached, and the home and meals provided. Most importantly they should be celebrated for the love extended and for just being “Dad” in every sense of the word.
