Monitoring a Child’s Online Networking

As technology advances, children are turning to online networking as a way to stay in touch with their peers. To children, sites such as Facebook and Twitter seem harmless but to parents these sites are a source of great concern. The vastly evolving world of computer networking presents both endless possibilities and pitfalls. As parents, we want our children to be technologically savvy, but they must also learn how to interact with the virtual community in a responsible manner.
Facebook is a website where teens enjoy communicating with their “friends.” But potential dangers do lurk, and teens are frequently unaware of risks. Ironically Facebook “friends” are not friends in the truest sense of the word, but often times they are indeed strangers or people that our children barely know. Consequently, predators find certain websites to be a ready source of access to a vulnerable segment of the population, our children. Considering the potential for danger, parents must closely monitor a child’s access to the computer. Would you leave your child isolated in a room with a complete stranger? This is exactly what is done when a child is left to explore the virtual world without your guidance and attention.
There are however ways that a parent can assure the on-line safety of their child.
- Consider establishing a Face book account and being a Facebook friend to your child, which will allow you to be an effective presence in their virtual world.
- Monitor your child’s “friend” list to determine if your child should safely communicate with that individual.
- Make sure that your child does not provide personal information that would allow a predator to locate them.
- Limit your child’s daily on-line computer usage
- Never allow your child to have access to the computer in an isolated space, such as their bedroom.
Let’s face it. This new “social networking” world has become a fundamental means of interaction for today’s teens. Parents must establish rules by which their children can engage in this form of communication safely. Wherever they go on this virtual journey, a parent must go along for the ride, providing direction and guidance, until they can navigate safely on their own.

Face Book
He blocked me from seeing his page, this makes me suspicious. Should I demand he let me see it or just take FB away from him. I do believe he should be monitored, since he is so wordly, and knows all. Please tell me what you think.
Thank You
